Is there Uber in Hurghada?
Yes. Uber lists Hurghada as one of the Egyptian cities it serves, and inDrive lists it too, airport included. I am a private driver here, so I am the last person who benefits from telling you that. But you are going to find out anyway, and I would rather you arrive well than book me for a trip an app would have handled better.
When an app is the better choice
- Short hops around Hurghada, El Dahar, the marina, a restaurant in the evening
- One or two people with light bags
- Daytime, when there are plenty of drivers about
- You already have an Egyptian SIM or roaming that works
- You would rather see a price on a screen than agree one out loud
When it tends to go wrong
- Landing at two in the morning after a delay, with nobody to call
- Four people and four suitcases, which is more car than most app rides expect
- The long runs to Soma Bay, Safaga, El Quseir or Marsa Alam
- No data the moment you land, which is exactly when you need the app
- A young child who needs a seat that has to be fitted before departure
- A flight that might land two hours late, because no app is watching it
What I do that an app does not
- The price is agreed before you fly and does not move afterwards
- I check your flight and come for the time you actually land, not the time on the ticket
- I wait inside arrivals with your name on a sign, so there is nobody to find
- Child seats are free and already fitted when I set off
- It is the same car and the same driver on the way back
- You pay at the end, in dollars, euros, pounds or Egyptian pounds

Does Uber work at Hurghada Airport?
Uber lists Hurghada as a city it covers, and inDrive says the same and mentions airport rides directly. Whether a driver is actually close by at the hour you land is a different question, and nobody can promise you that in advance.
Do I need an Egyptian SIM card?
You need working data to open the app at all. Either buy a SIM in the arrivals hall or make sure your roaming is switched on before you fly. Airport wifi is not something to rely on with luggage in your hands.
So are the apps cheaper than you?
For a short run into town, often yes. I am not going to pretend a fixed private transfer competes on price with a five kilometre app ride at midday. What you are paying me for is that the price cannot change, that I am already there when you land, and that you are not solving a problem at one in the morning in a country you do not know.
